MONTREAL | The mythical piece Broue is about to revive under the “new administration,” composed of Benoît Brière, Martin Drainville and Luc Guérin.

The three actors will offer their reinterpretation of the classic boards in quebec starting in June 2019, at the Théâtre du Vieux-Terrebonne, in Québec city, and Gatineau next fall, in a version that is barely retouched.

“These are the three best in town, after me, to play it”, has launched Marc Messier at a press conference on Friday morning.

All of the artists involved in the creation of the comedy-cult were gathered in one place could not be more evocative given the subject, the Tavern, The White Horse, Ontario street, for this announcement.

The trio-pillar to Broue – Michel Côté, Marc Messier and Marcel Gauthier – as well as the authors Jean-Pierre Plante, Claude Meunier, Francine Ruel and Louis Saïa, surrounded proudly the three “recruits” Brière, Drainville and Guerin. They have passed on the torch blows of pats on the back and braces, in an atmosphere of good laugh.

“There is not a player in Quebec, who has dabbled a little bit of comedy, who has not dreamed of having his Broue, is packed Benoît Brière. And then, as the years pass, and you say to yourself that you would like to have Broue short!”

Many suitors

The new performers, which produce the project with their company Household three –which is active mainly at the Théâtre du Vieux-Terrebonne, and are apparently manifested rapidly when Side, Messier and Gauthier have announced that they would cease to play Broue, in the spring of 2017. “Respectful and shy,” was held to specify Benoît Brière.

“For years, we buy the rights of americans, French, british. The challenge is to find parts where there are roles with meat for the three. When you have a structure such as Broue, with a series of characters, we, it is for the birds”, explained Luc Guérin.

The entire theatre was aware that the troop of Broue would give the rights of production for it to be eventually resumed, and it seems that the interested to resurrect the work were many.

The choice of the soundtrack is focused on Brière, Drainville and Guerin because of the comical play of the three stooges and the unconditional friendship that unites them.

“To play Broue, it takes a sense of comedy and a good agreement between the three, what they have, because it’s been a long time that they work together, stressed Marc Messier. This was also the case for the three of us. We had already collaborated extensively before Broue. It is a piece of cake for them; I’m sure they will be very well.”

With care

The dramatizations of Broue, camped in the Quebec pre-referendum, on the eve of the entry of women in the taverns, will be slightly modified, so you don’t distort the opus, said the actors of the new version.

Martin Drainville has simply mentioned that new sound clips, music, or advertisements would be possibly integrated into the staging.

“For us, it is a polaroid full of topicality and resonance, even today, and this is what we want to put forward. But I don’t think we’re going to do for 40 years…,” said the latter.

Our men are still unaware of which of them will represent the Bob, Pointed, Wart, Travolta and other actors legendary “Broue”, of which there are 18 in the story. Rehearsals will begin the end of this week.

“We want to take a lot of time to do it. It is an object that wants to handle with great care”, is committed Luc Guérin.

Inspiration real

For his part, Claude Meunier told on Friday that his cronies authors and himself have really crossed all the characters that populate the small universe of Broue, in a tavern at the corner of avenue du Parc and rue Saint-Viateur, where Louis Saïa and him spent once a lot of a good time.

“It has altered not to hurt, but it was talking to us a lot,” he noted.

Broue will be showing at the Theatre du Vieux-Terrebonne as of June 6, and August 17, 2019, before moving to the Salle Albert-Rousseau, Quebec city, September 20 and 21, and to la Salle Odyssey, in Gatineau, on 18 and 19 October. Tickets and information www.broue.ca.

What they said…

“The success of Broue relies on the writing, the lyrics, the staging and the interpretation. It is a conjunction of disparate elements that have come to characterize a whole. It was a gallery of characters typical of quebec, and universal at the same time.” – Jean-Pierre Plante

“At the time, the tavern was a place a little sacred. It was the place of the confession of men, the place where we would share our confidences, see our chum psychiatrist in the drink (laughter), and to entrust to him all our problems.” Louis Saïa

“I think Broue not ages ever because it is a time, such as the plays of Molière. Broue, this is a drama that we looked at with a magnifying glass humorous. The characters do not live for happiness. They are sad and manage to do not as it sounds, they are lying to themselves. The tavern is the only place where they truly become someone else, because at work, they are often a little under-considered. They say that it is them who wear the trousers at home, but this is not true. They are harmed.” – Michel Côté
