Made in Japan, the Corolla Hatchback made its debut in the month of August. It is therefore necessary to opt for a Corolla Hatchback SE (22 580 $), located one step higher in the hierarchy of versions, to take advantage of the comfort provided by heated seats and for wheels 16-inch alloy wheels, seyantes, paddle gear shifts, in the event it chooses also the automatic gearbox optional (1000 $). By its endowment, but also its cost base, this version is more close to the old Corolla iM. But still, a notch above, the version IS Improved (23 980 $) provides in addition to a heated steering wheel leather-wrapped, a device for monitoring blind spots (very handy) and alloy wheels of 18 inches, and the equipment that it was impossible to get with a iM.
Finally, there’s the Corolla Hatchback XSE (27 980 $), the high-end version. Its endowment, which encompasses that of the two previous versions, is enriched with seats covered partially in leather, dual-zone air conditioning, fog lights LED and an infotainment system to the more sophisticated with GPS and combined with a touch screen 7-inch (replacing the screen of 4.2-inch of the other versions). In short, with a greater variety of versions (and prices), Toyota is hoping to attract more buyers, which is perfectly plausible.
A spirited motoring
The interior adopts a modern style and the finish is neat. In addition, the bucket seats are very comfortable.
A new engine should also help increase the interest in this car. Under the hood houses a brand new engine called Dynamic Force. This 4– cylinder 2.0 L injects 168 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque to the new compact, dimensions, significantly higher than the 137 hp and 126 lb-ft that delivered the 4 – cylinder 1.8 L of iM. However, for this car, whose mass was only slightly increased (54 kg for the manual version and 13 kg for the automatic), these gains translate into acceleration and pickup a little more vivid : the manufacturer has cut off about 1 sec in the 0-100 km/h (about 9 to 8 s), so that the times of 80 to 110 km/h require a few tenths of a second less.
The approval to use two transmissions offered, there are also comments approvers. The six-speed manual transmission, which is part of the endowment of series of versions of entry-level and IS, shines through his handling of flexible and by a judicious layering. As for the box continuously variable automatic Direct Shift (standard on the XSE and optional for other versions), it does not impose these unpleasant increases regime as do, for example, some models of Nissan. Its input in action is instant and its manual mode Shiftmatic, which simulates 10 reports, enables lovers of sporty driving to take full advantage of the engine brake at the right times.
As is usually the case with a box continuously variable automatic, this Corolla makes it 11 % less energy intensive than the manual. It is also 11 % more energy efficient than that used by the Corolla iM. Based on fuel consumption ratings published by natural Resources Canada (Nrcan), this dual-benefit justified the choice of this automatic transmission.
The interior of this car is distinguished by a modern style and a clean finish. In addition, the bucket seats are very comfortable. However, the rear seats provide 9 % less leg room than the iM. Compared to a Subaru Impreza hatchback, a compact car the most spacious in this category, the gap widens to 18 % ! The rear seats are best suited to young children than to adults ! Finally, the trunk has a threshold that is annoying and an opening rather small, not to mention that its useful volume is 13 % lower than that of an iM when the backs of the 60/40 split of the rear bench seat are in place. It is therefore necessary to think twice before loading very large package. And then, sacrificing the rear seats, it has a trunk much more practical than with a sedan Corolla !
